Description
Our vegan omega-3 oil softgels contain 500mg of DHA-rich Algae Oil with a minimum guarantee of 200mg DHA per capsule.
Most non-vegan Omega-3 supplements rely on Fish Oil. Most cheaper vegan Omega-3 supplements rely on Linseed/Flaxseed, which is vegan and initially seems like a great-value source of Omega-3 fatty acids, however, the human body can’t actually make use of most of the oil in this case.
Linseed Oil (Flaxseed Oil):
Linseed oil, also known as flaxseed oil, is a rich source of the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is a type of Omega-3 fatty acid. Your body can convert ALA into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the two most notable omega-3 fatty acids. However, this conversion process is typically inefficient, typically less than 15%.
As for bioavailability, flaxseed oil is efficiently absorbed when ingested, but the ultimate availability of EPA and DHA is limited due to the inefficient conversion process in the body.
When it comes to how the liver processes it, after the flaxseed oil is ingested, enzymes in the liver convert the ALA to EPA and DHA. These are the omega-3 fatty acids that are known for their health benefits, including reducing inflammation and promoting heart health.
DHA-rich Omega-3 Supplements Like Ours At NoBo:
DHA-rich omega-3 supplements, like ours, contain high concentrations of DHA and often EPA as well, both long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Our vegan friendly oil is derived from algae, which is naturally high in DHA and EPA.
The bioavailability of DHA and EPA from algae oil is generally higher than from plant-based omega-3s, as they bypass the need for conversion in the body and are readily available for absorption and utilization. This means that more of the omega-3 fatty acids reach your cells and can have a more potent effect.
With regards to the liver’s role, it has less work to do when you consume a DHA-rich supplement compared to consuming ALA from linseed oil. This is because the omega-3 fatty acids in these supplements are already in the forms (EPA and DHA) that the body uses, bypassing the need for conversion in the liver.
